How does the Green Box Garden work?
Take a normal garden container. Add a fill tube and fully-enclosed reservoir. Then make it square instead of round (square containers allow 25% more growing space than round ones). Add a solid metal handle suitable for hanging your container (think vertical gardening). Make it portable, and reusable. Finally, design the reservoir so it delivers water directly to the plant's roots, from below. Boom! You have a Green Box Garden.
What Do You Mean By "Home Made"?
With help from my assistants (ages 9, 6, and 4 years old), I have been making self-watering containers for years & using them in my own house and garden. Over the years, we have made many improvements to the basic design. Now we make extra containers, and sell them to people online. Internet commerce at its best!
Couldn't I make one myself?
You could definitely make your own self-watering containers, if you have the right tools & materials. You might even be able to use supplies that you already have around your house or garage. But to make 1 brand new, self-watering container similar to a Green Box Garden (using food-grade components), it would probably take a couple hours (including a trip to the hardware store), and cost anywhere from $40 to $50 (or more, if you didn't have all the correct tools & supplies). I buy all the materials in bulk, and assemble multiple units at once. So why not let me make a few containers for you!
What can I grow?
You can grow just about anything! The general rule is that the Green Box Garden will support any plant up to 2.5 times the size of the container. So the 9 Inch "Cube" can grow plants up to 24 inches tall. Plants that grow really well include: lettuce, kale, spinach, other leafy greens, radishes, small tomato plants, pepper plants of all varieties, green beans, snap peas, garlic, green onions, decorative flowers, and all kinds of herbs and spices.
What about BIGGER plants?
I have grown cucumbers, full-size tomato plants, and even sweet corn in my Green Box Garden 9 Inch Cubes! But these plants required much more frequent watering and tended to tip over in moderate breezes. So I would recommend sticking to the smaller plants.
Can I crowd plant, and plant multiple rounds of crops?
Yes! I have grown 1 garlic plant in the middle, with 4 radishes around the edge. The radishes matured much faster than the garlic, so we had 3 harvests of radish by the time the garlic was mature. I have planted 1 tomato plant with 4 basil plants around it. I have planted 4 lettuce plants in the same container. As long as you keep the reservoir full and fertilize regularly, you can easily grow multiple plants at the same time.
Is it better to grow from seeds, or transplants?
Both methods work great. With most plants I like to start seeds in a separate starter tray, then transplant larger plants into the Green Box Garden. Using this method also increases production. For example, you can start your Green Box Garden with snow peas early in the Spring. At the same time, plant bell peppers in a seed starter tray. By the time the snow peas are done producing, you can transplant the peppers into the Green Box Garden for a summer harvest. Near the end of the summer, start some lettuce seeds in a starter tray. By the time your peppers are done, your lettuce will be ready to transplant into the Green Box Garden. In 1 year you can grow snow peas, bell peppers, and lettuce all in the same 9 Inch Cube!
